ADE: AFROGROOVES

Tijdens ADE zullen we bij Studio/K protest(muziek) en sociaal activisme in het nachtleven van Amsterdam onderzoeken én faciliteren. Hierom zijn we een samenwerking aangegaan met Afrogrooves.

➠ Afrogrooves is een groeiende community van mensen met een gedeelde liefde voor West-Afrikaanse muziek. Tijdens open jamsessies worden de hypnotiserende klanken van afrobeat, afrofunk en highlife verkend en gevierd. Muziek wordt wel eens als niet-politiek gezien, maar de realiteit is anders. Afrogrooves neemt stelling tegen racisme, xenofobie, seksisme en alle andere vormen van onderdrukking. Samen proberen ze de muziek te dekoloniseren, machtsverhoudingen te verbreken en een inclusieve en veilige ruimte te creëren met fantastische muziek.

➠ Tijdens de vrijdagavond van ADE beginnen we met een kritische panel-discussie met experts over de Nederlandse muziekindustrie en de plek van West-Afrikaanse muziek in dit muzieklandschap. Na afloop zal er een urenlange livemuziek sessie zijn: deels voorbereid en grotendeels geïmproviseerd. De huisband van Afrogrooves zal de sessie openen, maar het zal zich omtoveren tot een open jamsessie, waarbij alle muzikanten welkom zijn om aan te haken, dus neem vooral je instrumenten mee!

➠ Voor de late uurtjes zal een DJ de grooves bezorgen en de gehele avond kun je ook een indringende expositie bewonderen. Voor ieder wat wils dus!

Studio/K facilitates and investigates protest music and social activism in the nightlife of Amsterdam. That’s why – for this ADE special – Studio/K is joining forces with Afrogrooves.

➠ Afrogrooves is a growing community of people with a shared love of West-African music. During open jam sessions the hypnotizing sounds of afrobeat, afrofunk and highlife are explored and celebrated. While music is sometimes unjustly depoliticized, Afrogrooves, as a platform and music collective, takes a stand against racism, sexism and other forms of oppression. Together we try to create an inclusive and creative space for highly danceable energetic music.

➠ During ADE’s Friday night, we’ll start with a critical panel discussion on protest music, Amsterdam’s nightlife and the Dutch music industry. The discussion will be followed by a live music session: partially prepared repertoire but also largely improvised. The houseband of Afrogrooves will open the session, paying tribute to the incredible protest music of Fela Kuti. What is the relevance of Fela’s music today in the Dutch local context? Afterwards we’ll continue with an open jam session where all musicians can join. Make sure to bring your instruments!

➠ For the late-night hours a DJ will deliver the grooves and throughout the whole night you can admire an exhibition. There will definitely be something for everyone! More info coming soon.
